Materials:

  • 5" Square piece of 3/16" (5mm) thick cork
  • Red acrylic paint
  • Paint brush
  • Utility knife
  • Fine tip black permanent marker
1) Trace the heart pattern onto the cork with a ball point pen.

2) Using the utility knife, (this is an adult's job) cut out the heart from the cork.  As you cut, hold the knife at an angle so that the other side of the heart is slightly smaller than the side with the pen marks.

Craft a heart shaped cork coaster with a smiley face3) Flip the heart over so that the slightly smaller side is face up.  This will be the right side of your coaster.

4) Paint the top and sides of the cork heart red.  Let dry completely.

5) Using a black permanent marker, draw either a face in the center of your coaster or draw a dash line just inside the edge of your heart and again in the center of the heart as pictured.

It is not recommended that you use these coasters with drinks that are sweating excessively as the water could seep through or bead off the top and damage your tabletop.  They are however, excellent for use with a hot cup of coffee, tea or hot chocolate.
