Decoupage Napkin Ring

how odeoupage a napkin ring

Materials:

  • Recycled cardboard tube (paper towel tube or toilet tissue tube)
  • Small piece of thin cardboard such as poster board or an empty cereal box
  • Acrylic paint
  • Paintbrush
  • Decoupage glue such as Modge Podge (any brand is fine)
  • Tacky glue or a hot glue gun with glue sticks
  • Piece of fabric* with a design that can be cut out

*The fabric should have little pictures that can be cut out.  My sample uses a leaf fabric.  The leaf I cut out was approximately 4" long x 2 1/2" wide.  If you can't find an appropriate fabric, a napkin with an appropriate picture will work fine.

  1. Cut the cardboard tube into rings that are approximately 1" wide.  You will need one ring for each napkin ring.
  2. Paint the cardboard ring in a color that compliments the fabric shape you have chosen.   Be sure to paint the whole ring including the inside and the edges.  Set aside to dry.
  3. Roughly cut around the picture you wish to use.  At this point do not cut close to the picture.
  4. Using a paint brush or sponge applicator, apply a layer of Modge Podge (or whatever decoupage glue you are using) to the cardboard and lay your fabric right side up on top of the cardboard.  Then, paint a layer of Modge Podge (decoupage glue) over the top (right side) of your fabric.
  5. Let dry completely.  Then, carefully cut around your shape (in my case the leaf) trimming off the extra fabric or napkin leaving just the shape.
  6. Turn your leaf (or other shape) over and paint the cardboard on the back to match the cardboard ring.  Let dry.
  7. Glue the leaf to the cardboard ring.  If you use hot glue, you will receive an instant bond.  If you use tacky glue , lay your leaf face down on your work surface.  Apply some tacky glue to the center of it and place the painted cardboard ring into the glue.  Let glue dry completely before moving or using the napkin ring.
  • You could use glue dots or heavy duty 2-sided tape to attach the cardboard ring if making this project with children.
  • As a variation of this napkin ring, you can cut out a shape (teddy bear, heart, Christmas tree etc.) from cardboard or cardstock and decoupage a piece of small print calico fabric to the front of it.
