Lollipop Ornament

Christmas craft idea - lollipop ornament

Have fun painting lollipop Christmas ornaments for your holiday tree!

Materials:

  • Wide craft stick
  • 3 1/2" Paper Mache disk
  • All purpose sealer*
  • Acrylic paint - two colors
  • Paint brush
  • Glamour dust (this is a very fine glitter)
  • 12" piece of thin ribbon
  • Craft knife or other sharp knife

*Can be found where acrylic paints are sold

  1. Your Paper Mache disk should have a string coming out of the top as a hanger.  Opposite this string, cut a slit in the disk slightly smaller than the width of your craft stick.  Gently push the craft stick into this slit.  It should fit very snuggly.  If needed, cut your slit a little bigger but try to keep it as tight as possible.  If it fits tightly, you will not need any glue but if you accidentally cut it too big, use a little glue to hold it in place.

  2. Paint the entire disk with the all purpose sealer and let dry completely.
  3. Paint the entire disk with your base color (in our sample it is blue). Let dry completely then apply a second coat if needed then let dry. It might be easier to paint one side of the disk and let it dry then paint the second side.  Don't forget to paint the edges also.
  4. Using your second color of paint (ours is white) start at the center of the disk and paint a swirl on one side of the disk coming out toward the outer edge.  While this paint is still wet, sprinkle it with the glamour dust.  If you think your lollipop will need a second coat of the swirl color, wait and sprinkle the glamour dust on the second coat of paint.  See our Hints and Tips section for suggestions when working with glitter.
  5. Once the first side of your disk is completely dry, repeat step 4 on the second side of the disk and let dry completely.
  6. Cut a piece of cellophane 12" x 5".  Using a small sharp pair of scissors or the end of a sharp knife, make a very small hole in the center of this piece of cellophane.  Slide the hanging string through this little slit in the cellophane.  Then, neatly wrap the cellophane around the lollipop and tie it with a ribbon around the stick.
