Double Crochet Stitch

double crochet stitch pattern

When you crochet using the basic double crochet stitch, it takes a bit longer to complete each stitch than the half double stitch as it has an additional step but the completed stitch is a little bit taller than the half double. Once you get into the rhythm of this stitch, it too will move along quickly. The abbreviation for double crochet is dc.

Materials: Any weight yarn with the appropriate size crochet hook. Our sample was made using worsted weight yarn and a size H (5.0 mm) crochet hook.

Abbreviations:
dc = double crochet
ch = chain
rep = repeat
st = stitch
yo = yarn over

You can work any number of stitches but add two to the base chain.

1st row: Skip 2 ch, 1dc into next chain and each remaining ch to end. Turn
2nd row: Ch 2, dc into next st and each st across, turn
Rep 2nd row to desired length.

Review: A double crochet stitch is made as follows -wrap yarn once around your crochet hook, insert hook into corresponding stitch of previous row, yo, draw up the loop, yo draw the yarn through two loops, yo draw through two loops ending with a single loop remaining on hook.
