Basic Single Crochet Stitch

crochet pattern basic single crochet stitch

Above we have made a sample of what the basic single crochet stitch looks like when worked through both loops. It is one of the most basic crochet stitches you will learn and is used alone or in combination with other stitches in many crochet patterns.

Materials: You can use any type of yarn to make the single crochet stitch. Our sample was made with worsted weight yarn and a size H (5.0mm) crochet hook.

Abbreviations:
sc = single crochet
ch = chain
yo = yarn over

You can work any number of stitches but add one to the base chain.

1st row: Sc in second ch from hook and each ch across, turn
2nd row: Ch 1, working through both loops of previous row, sc in first sc and each sc across, turn.
Repeat 2nd row until work is desired length.

Review: A single crochet stitch is made as follows - insert hook, yo, draw up the loop, yo again, draw the yarn through both loops on your work ending with a single loop remaining on hook.
