Paper Mache Reindeer Ornament

how to make a reindeer ornament from paper mache

Rudolph has never been easier to make than he is with this simple reindeer ornament. If you are looking for a fun and simple Christmas craft for the whole family, our paper mache reindeer ornament will fit the bill. Change the nose to a black pompom for Santa's other reindeer - you know Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner and Blitzen. Why not make all nine of Santa's reindeer!

Craft Supplies:

  • 2 1/2" round paper mache ball ornament
  • 3/4" red sparkly pompom
  • Brown pipe cleaner
  • 1/8" wide gold ribbon (about a 12" piece)
  • Fine line black permanent marker
  • Two 12mm wiggle eyes
  • Blush
  • Hot glue gun and glue sticks*

* You can use tacky glue for the bows, eyes and nose but the antlers should be attached with the hot glue to keep them in place.

  1. Make two antlers. For each antler, cut one 3" piece of brown pipe cleaner and a 1 1/2" piece. Twist the center of the 1 1/2" piece of pipe cleaner around the longer piece about 1/2" to 3/4" down from one end. Bend the ends up to form the antler (refer to photo). On the opposite end of the pipe cleaner, fold the bottom 1/2" up then bend the long part so that it is perpendicular to the center of the 1/2" piece you bent up. The bottom of the pipe cleaner should look like an upside down T.
  2. The top of the T (which is the bottom of your antler) is used to glue the antlers to the paper mache ball. Glue one antler about 1" to the right of the hanger and the other antler 1" to the left of the hanger.
  3. Make two bows out of the gold ribbon and glue one at the base of each antler.
  4. Glue a red (or black) pompom to the center of the reindeer's face.
  5. Glue the two eyes just above the nose.
  6. Using a black marker, draw on a mouth and eyebrows.
