Poinsettia Tree

Christmas craft ideas - Poinsettia Christmas tree

Make poinsettia trees from red, white or blue flowers. Easy enough for older children to make.

Materials:

  • Styrofoam cone 9" tall
  • Styrofoam disc 3" diameter and 1" thick
  • Brown acrylic paint & paintbrush
  • Brown craft foam or felt  3 1/2" square
  • Tacky glue
  • Small silk poinsettias*; approximately 3" in diameter

*Our sample used approximately 55 flowers

  1. Place the Styrofoam disc on top of your craft foam or felt and trace around it.  Cut out the felt/craft foam circle and glue it to the bottom of the Styrofoam disc.

  2. Paint the 1" edge of the disc brown all the way around. Let dry

  3. With the disc flat on your work surface, craft foam/felt side down, glue the bottom of the cone on top of the disc with  either tacky glue or hot glue. If using tacky glue let dry before proceeding. If using hot glue it is best to use low temp as the high temp can melt Styrofoam.

  4. Remove the poinsettia flowers from their stems. The back of the flower will still have a small piece of plastic stem.

  5. Squeeze some tacky glue onto a small disposable plate or on to a recycled plastic lid. Dip the plastic stem on the back of the flower into the glue then press it into the Styrofoam cone.

  6. Continue dipping the stems in glue and pressing them into the Styrofoam cone until the cone is completely covered with poinsettias. Place one of the flowers on top of the cone.
