Recycled CD Spider

how to make a halloween spider

Recycle your old cds into spider Halloween decorations. With some felt and pipe cleaners you can have a whole army of spiders to decorate your home. They are also a fun craft for kids to make at a Halloween party.

Materials:

  • Recycled cd
  • Two 20mm wiggly eyes
  • 4 Black pipe cleaners
  • Red pompom
  • Tacky glue
  • Glittery black felt
  • Hot glue gun* and glue sticks

* If you don't have or want to use a hot glue gun, you can use just the tacky glue. If just using the tacky glue, once you glue the pipe cleaners in place, use clothespins to hold the pipe cleaners in place until the glue dries.

  1. Place a piece of black felt face down on your work surface. Lay a cd on top of the felt and trace around it with dress makers chalk or a light colored crayon. Cut out the circle.
  2. Using tacky glue, glue the plain (wrong) side of the felt circle onto the Non-shiny side of the cd (put the glue on the side of the cd with the label or words on it). Place aside for a moment.
  3. Curl the end of one of the pipe cleaners around the tip of a pencil and twist the end to keep in place. Repeat on the other end of the pipe cleaner and on both ends of the other three pipe cleaners. These will be the spiders feet.
  4. Turn the cd over so that the felt side is down. Using the hot glue gun, glue the four pipe cleaners to the shinny side of the cd as pictured below. Make sure that you center them side to side if you want your spider to be able to stand up.
  5. Once the glue is dry/cooled, bend the pipe cleaners at a 90degree angle where they meet the edge of the cd. Then bend the loops (feet) you made at the ends of the pipe cleaners so that they will sit flat on the table.
  6. Glue two wiggly eyes and a pompom nose to the sparkly side of the felt covered cd.
