Princess Dress Up Skirt

skirt sewing pattern

Make princess dress up clothes with our free sewing pattern. Your little princess will love playing dress up in this simple skirt sewn from one yard of fabric and some tulle.

  1. Cut the salvage edges off the fabric.
  2. With right sides together, line up the left selvage edge with the right selvage edge. Pin in place and stitch. This forms a tube.
  3. Right side out the tube.
  4. Bring the bottom of the tube up through the inside and line it up with the top edge. Baste the two raw edges together. The bottom of the skirt will not need to be hemmed because it has a folded edge.
  5. Make a casing along the top edge by folding the edge (both layers) to the inside 1/4" and top stitch in place.
  6. Turn the top edge to the inside again 1" this time. Stitch close tot he bottom edge of the fold forming a casing. Lease a 2" opening. This is the casing that your elastic will go through later.
  7. Take a 3 yard piece of tulle. Fold it in half widthwise then fold it in half twice lengthwise. Stitch close to the top folded edge to keep all 8 layers in place.
  8. Pin the edge of the tulle (the edge you just stitched) just under the casing on the inside of the skirt.
  9. Top stitch in place.
  10. Cut a piece of 1/2" wide elastic1 1/2" longer than your child's waist. (ex 23 + 1 1/2" = 24 1/2". Cut the elastic 24 1/2").
  11. Thread the elastic through the casing*.
  12. Overlap the ends of the elastic by 1 1/2" and stitch them together securely.
  13. Stitch the opening in the casing closed.

*Tip: Attach a safety pin to one end of the casing prior to threading the elastic through the casing. (It is much easier to push the hard pin through. Then, simply remove the pin once the elastic has come out the other side.)
