Football Ornaments Set #2

Snowman Player, Cheerleader & Referee

snowman football player pattern and instructions

Every football fan should have these three ornaments on their Christmas tree.  This trio of snowmen can be crafted in multiples and combined with our other football ornaments to decorate a football themed Christmas tree.  Complete crafting instructions and snowman patterns included.

Snow girl Cheerleader

Materials:

  • Two 4 1/2" squares white felt
  • Fabric paint in squeeze bottles - orange, black & you teams colors
  • Sewing machine and/or needle and thread
  • 7" of 1 1/4" wide lace in your team's color
  • Hot glue gun and glue sticks (optional)
  • Two 3/8" pompoms
  • 3" thin ribbon
  • 6" elastic thread for hanging
  • Polyester fiberfill (stuffing)
  • powder blush
  1. Trace and cut out two snow girl shapes from white felt.
  2. With right sides together, sew around close to the edge leaving a 1 1/4" opening at the bottom for turning & stuffing.
  3. Right side out and stuff with Polyester fiberfill.
  4. Hand sew opening closed.
  5. Hot glue lace around waist of snow girl being sure that your overlap seam is in the back.  If you don't have a hot glue gun, stitch the lace on.
  6. Apply blush to the cheek area.  With black fabric paint, make 2 dots for the eyes and a row of dots for the mouth (these dots represent coal).
  7. For the nose, use orange fabric paint - near the center of the face, squeeze out some paint release the pressure and pull to one side.  If done correctly it will resemble a carrot.  I suggest practicing on something else, like a paper towel or felt scrap first.
  8. With fabric paint in your school colors, write your town or team name or initial across the chest area.
  9. Glue one little pompom into each hand.
  10. Make a bow with the ribbon and glue or sew it onto your cheerleader's head.
  11. Thread a needle with elastic thread or crochet thread and pull thru the back of the head near the top.  Remove the needle and knot the two ends together.  This is your ornament hanger.

Snowman Football Player

My sample shows blue and white (which I will refer to) but substitute them for your team's colors.

Materials:

  • Two 4 1/2" squares of white felt
  • Sewing machine (recommended)
  • Needle & thread
  • 1 1/2" Styrofoam ball
  • 2 1/4" piece of silver or gold pipe cleaner (chenille stem)
  • Blue craft paint
  • Paint brush
  • 1/2" x 8" piece of flannel
  • blue, black & orange fabric paint in squeeze bottles
  • Polyester fiberfill (stuffing)
  • 6" of elastic thread
  • Small knife such as a paring knife or steak knife
  1. Trace and cut out 2 snowman shapes from the white felt.
  2. With right sides together, sew around close to the edge leaving the side of one leg unstitched.
  3. Turn right side out and stuff with fiberfill.
  4. Hand sew opening closed and place aside while we work on the helmet.
  5. To make the helmet, you need to cut off a sliver of the Styrofoam ball so that it has a flat spot.  Set the Styrofoam on a cutting board or other flat surface - flat side down - this flat side will be the bottom of the helmet.  Now cut a similar flat surface on what will be the face of the helmet.
  6. Carefully hollow out the helmet using a scraping motion being careful not to make the Styrofoam too thin.  I found a metal baby spoon to work quite well but use whatever you have handy.
  7. Paint the outside of the Styrofoam with the blue craft paint.  Also, paint just inside the edges.  Let dry completely and if needed, apply a second coat of paint.
  8. Once the helmet is dry.  Thread your piece of elastic thread onto a sewing needle (choose a needle that is not too big)  and sew through the top of the helmet by going down into the helmet and back up close to where you went down.  Remove the needle and knot the two ends together.  This is your hanger.
  9. Carefully place the helmet on the snowman's head.  You may have to squeeze the head a bit to get it in the helmet.  Take your time so as not to crack the helmet.
  10. Now that the helmet is on your football player, you can paint on the face.  To do this, use the black fabric paint to make two dots for eyes and 4 or 5 dots for the mouth.
  11. For the nose, use orange fabric paint - near the center of the face, squeeze out some paint release the pressure and pull to one side.  If done correctly it will resemble a carrot.  I suggest practicing on something else, like a paper towel or felt scrap first.
  12. With white fabric paint, write your school initial on each side of the helmet.  I put an M on each side of my helmet.
  13. Using blue fabric paint or your school's color, write your favorite player's number on the front of your snowman.
  14. 1Tie the flannel around the snowman's neck for a scarf.
  15. Poke one end of the pipe cleaner between the head and the helmet on each side of the mouth to represent the face mask.

Snowman Referee

Materials:

  • Two 4 1/2" squares of white felt
  • One 2" square of stiff black felt
  • Polyester fiberfill (stuffing)
  • Black & orange fabric paint in squeeze bottles
  • Sewing Machine (recommended)
  • Needle, white & black thread
  • 6" piece of elastic thread
  • Powder Blush
  1. Trace and cut out 2 snowman shapes from the white felt.
  2. With right sides together, sew around close to the edge leaving the side of one leg unstitched.
  3. Turn right side out and stuff with fiberfill.
  4. Hand sew opening closed and place aside while we get the visor ready.
  5. Trace and cut out the visor from the stiff felt.
  6. Place the visor on top of the snowman's head and, using black thread, attach with 4 or 5 stitches on each end.
  7. Apply a little blush where cheeks will be. With black fabric paint, make 2 dots for eyes and 5 dots in a curved row for the mouth (these dots represent coal)
  8. For the nose, use orange fabric paint - near the center of the face, squeeze out some paint release the pressure and pull to one side.  If done correctly it will resemble a carrot.  I suggest practicing on something else, like a paper towel or felt scrap first.
  9. Using the black fabric paint, draw on the black lines of the referee shirt.  The easiest way to do this is to make a V at the neckline, then outline the sleeves and connect the "shirt" at the bottom.  Finally, draw lines inside your shirt outline for the stripes.
