Description

Once you learn this basic granny square, you can make an unlimited number of crochet items such as Christmas stockings, afghans, baby blankets, scarves and pillows.

Try using different types and weights of yarn for different looks using the same pattern.

Craft Instructions

Variation #1:

Ch 5; join with a slst to form a ring.

Round 1: Ch 3, 2 dc in ring* ch1, 3dc in ring. Repeat from * 2 more times. Ch 1 join with slst to 3rd ch

Round 2: Ch 3, 2 dc in corner space ch1 * 3dc in next space, ch 1, 3 dc in same space, ch 1. Repeat from * 2 more times, 3 dc in beginning space, ch 1, join with slst to 3rd ch (of beginning ch 3)

Round 3: Ch 3, 2 dc in corner space, ch 1, *3 dc in next space, ch 1, 3 dc in next sp, ch1, 3 dc in same sp, ch 1. Repeat from * 2 more times. 3 dc in next sp, ch1, 3 dc in beginning sp, ch 1, join with a slst to 3rd ch (of beginning ch 3)

Continue as in round 3 for as many more rounds as you wish. Then, faster off and weave loose ends back into the square. Cut off any extra yarn.

Variation #2:

Variation #2 is much like #1 except you eliminate the "ch 1" between the groups of dcs except you still keep the "ch 1" on the corners. This gives the square a tighter look and makes the holes much smaller.

Ch 5; join with a slst to form a ring.

Round 1: Ch 3, 2 dc in ring* ch1, 3dc in ring. Repeat from * 2 more times. Ch 1 join with slst to 3rd ch

Round 2: Ch 3, 2 dc in corner space * 3dc in next space, ch 1, 3 dc in same space. Repeat from * 2 more times, 3 dc in beginning space, ch 1, join with slst to 3rd ch (of beginning ch 3)

Round 3: Ch 3, 2 dc in corner space, *3 dc in next space, 3 dc in corner sp, ch 1, 3 dc in same corner space. Repeat from * 2 more times, 3dc in next sp, 3 dc in beg sp, ch1, join with slst to 3rd ch (of beg ch 3)

Round 4: Ch 3, 2 dc in corner sp, * 3 dc in next sp, 3 dc in next sp, 3 dc in corner sp, ch 1, 3 dc in same corner sp. Repeat from * 2 more times, 3 dc in next sp, 3dc in next sp, 3 dc in beg sp, ch1, join with slst to 3rd ch (of beg ch 3)

Continue as you did in round 4 adding another se t of 3 dc on each side until the square is as large as you want it. Fasten off , weave loose ends into your work and cut off any extra yarn.
