Sewing Info & Tips

Materials:

  •  2 Chenille stems (pipe cleaners)
  • Recycled strawberry basket (with 3 rows of holes)
  • Easter Grass or shredded tissue
  • Two 17" x 1 1/4" strips of fabric**
  • One 24" X 1 1/4" strip of fabric

1) Working with the row of holes that is closest to the bottom of the basket, start weaving one of the 17" strips of fabric in and out through the holes.

2) Tuck the loose ends inside the basket so they don't show on the outside.

3) Repeat steps 1 and 2 with the other 17" strip of fabric but in the center row of holes. This time start over one hole so the seams are offset from the one below.

4) Leaving approximately a 4" tail of fabric on the outside of the basket and starting in the center of one of the longer sides of the basket, weave the 24" piece of fabric thru the top row of holes.

5) When you are done, you should have about another 4" piece of fabric on the outside next to the 1st 4" tail.

6) Tie these two pieces in a knot.  If you prefer to tie it in a bow, just make the top strip longer.

7) To make the handle, twist the two pipe cleaners together and attach each end to one short side of the basket by placing the end of the pipe cleaner thru the center hole on the top of the basket and twisting to keep it in place.

8) Finally, fill the basket with Easter grass or shredded tissue and it's ready for goodies!

**When choosing the fabric strips, I like to use 3 complimentary fabrics but you could use all the same if that's what you have. Also, I cut my strips with pinking sheers to help keep them from fraying.
