Description

Learn how to decorate a pumpkin without carving it. It's a great way to decorate your pumpkin early in the season. If you still want to carve your pumpkin as it gets closer to Halloween, you can just remove the embellishments and carve away. You can make this pumpkin witch from a real or artificial pumpkin by adding craft foam, a pipe cleaner and raffia.

Materials and Supplies

Craft Supplies:

  • Pumpkin; real or artificial
  • Raffia
  • Craft foam; black, purple and yellow
  • Green acrylic paint
  • Paint brush
  • Two 18 or 20mm wiggle eyes
  • 1 Black pipe cleaner
  • One Cork; 1"h x 3/4" on one end and 5/8" on other end*
  • String
  • Hot glue or heavy duty glue dots

*You can buy these corks at your local craft store.

Craft Instructions

  1. Paint the cork green and set aside to dry.
  2. Gather a nice size clump of raffia. Trim to about 15" long. Tie a piece of string tightly around the center of the bundle of raffia leaving about 4" of string on both ends of the knot. Using the extra length of string, tie the bundle of raffia to the pumpkin's stem as hair.
  3. Make a smaller bundle of raffia approximately 5" long. Tie it and attach it to the pumpkin in the same way you attached the hair in step 2. These are the witches bangs.
  4. Trace and cut out two 1 1/4" circles from black craft foam. Glue them onto the pumpkin and glue a wiggle eye to the center of each black circle.
  5. Glue the wider end of the cork to the center of the face as a nose.
  6. Cut an 8" piece of pipe cleaner for the mouth. Twist the ends together to form a ring. Bend the pipe cleaner into a mouth shape and glue it under the cork nose.
  7. Cut a hat shape from black craft foam. To cut the hat, start by cutting a triangle. About 1" from the bottom of the bottom of the triangle, cut in about 1" (on each side). Draw a line from the top point of the triangle to the spot you cut into. Cut along this line. Do this on both sides. Round the corners at the bottom of the of the hat brim (the part that sticks out 1" on each side).
  8. Cut a strip of purple craft foam that is the same width as the hat. Cut the ends of the purple strip on an angle so they line up with the edge of the hat.
  9. To make a buckle, cut a square that is slightly larger than the purple strip. On both sides of the yellow square, cut a slit about 1/4" from each side. Slide the purple strip through the slits in the yellow square and slide the square "buckle" to the center of the strip.
  10. Glue the ends of the purple strip to the front of the hat. Hot glue the back of the hat to the front of the stem.
