Materials and Supplies

Craft Supplies:

  • 3" Styrofoam egg
  • Acrylic paint; black & red
  • 2 Craft sticks
  • White glue
  • Hot glue gun & glue sticks
  • 8*' piece of crochet thread or elastic thread
  • 2 3/4"h x 7" w piece of fleece
  • 2 Colored toothpicks
  • 2 Sequins
  • Two 7 mm wiggle eyes
  • Scrap orange felt
  • Black felt ; 5" x 3 1/2"

Craft Instructions

  1. Stand the Styrofoam egg on end and gently press down on it to flatten the bottom of the egg.
  2. Draw a 2" high oval shape on one side of the penguin wit a pencil. Press into the Styrofoam as you draw so that you end up with an indent in the Styrofoam.
  3. Paint the Styrofoam egg black but leave the oval unpainted. Let dry completely. (It is easiest to paint the Styrofoam egg if you stick a toothpick in the bottom of the egg and hold the toothpick while yo paint the final part of the egg. Then poke the other end of the toothpick into a block of Styrofoam or a box to dry.)
  4. Paint two craft sticks red. Let dry completely.
  5. Cut a 2 3/4" h x 7" w piece of fleece. Fold it in half so the short sides match up. Stitch along this side. You now have a tube. Turn the tube right side out and gather one end. Either wrap a very small hair elastic around the gathered end or tie a piece of string around it. The gathered end is the top of the hat. Place the hat aside for the moment.
  6. Hot glue the two craft sticks to the bottom of the Styrofoam egg.
  7. Cut two wings from black felt using the attached pattern.
  8. Using a hot glue gun, glue one wing on each side of the egg as pictured.
  9. Fold the bottom of the hat up forming a cuff and hot glue on top of the egg. It is ok if the hat overlaps the top of the wings.
  10. Using white glue, glue the wiggly eyes on just under the hat.
  11. Cut a beak (a diamond shape) out of orange felt. Fold the beak in half and glue it to the penguin at the top of the white oval. Gently push the fold into the Styrofoam slightly.
  12. Dip the end of one of the toothpicks into white glue and slide one sequin onto the tip of the toothpick. This is a ski pole. Repeat to make a second ski pole.
  13. Hot glue one ski pole to the inside of each wing.
  14. Using a needle with a large eye, thread an 8" piece of crochet thread or elastic thread through the hat. Tie the ends in an overhand knot forming a hanger for your ornament.
